How to Read the Output
A dot (.) represents a short signal and a dash (-) represents a signal three times as long. Within one converted word, individual letters are separated by a single space, and separate words are separated by a forward slash surrounded by spaces. If you're reading this off the page rather than listening to it, that spacing is standing in for the timing gaps a real Morse operator would send: one unit between the dots and dashes of a single letter, three units between letters, and seven units between words.
Why the Codes Are the Length They Are
The lengths aren't arbitrary — this is a frequency-optimized code, not a decorative one. Letters that turn up constantly in ordinary English writing got the shortest signals, and letters that are genuinely rare got the longest, most elaborate ones, on the logic that a working telegraph operator sends far more of the common letters in a day than the rare ones, so shaving fractions of a second off the common signals pays off over a long message. That's the reasoning behind E's single dot and T's single dash at one end of the scale, and Q, X and Z's longer, multi-part codes at the other.
